August 17: Talking About Money

This month is an invitation to challenge our way of thinking. Let’s Talk Honestly About the realities of family life during the summer holidays.

Money is something that affects almost every part of family life, yet it can still feel like one of the hardest subjects to discuss openly.

When finances are tight, many parents understandably want to protect their children from worry. We may avoid difficult conversations, change the subject when questions arise or try to hide our concerns completely because we don’t want children to feel anxious or burdened by problems they cannot solve.

But children notice when parents are stressed, hear conversations about bills, notice changes to family plans or wonder why certain things are no longer possible. When they know something has changed but don’t understand what is happening, they may create their own explanations and sometimes those worries can feel bigger than the reality.

Today’s blog explores how we can talk about money with honesty while still protecting children from adult responsibilities. It is not about sharing every financial detail or expecting children to carry worries that belong to grown-ups. Instead, it is about creating age-appropriate conversations that help children understand the choices their family is making, while reassuring them that they are loved, supported and never responsible for fixing financial problems.

Because children deserve honesty and the security of knowing that they do not have to carry the weight of adult worries.
