August 18: The cost of summer holidays

This month is an invitation to challenge our way of thinking. Let’s Talk Honestly About the realities of family life during the summer holidays.

For children, the summer holidays can represent freedom, adventure and six weeks away from the routines of school. For many parents, however, that excitement sits alongside a growing list of financial questions and pressures.

Throughout this week, we have explored the idea that expensive does not always mean better, celebrated the value of free family time and considered how we can talk honestly about money without placing adult worries onto children. But recognising the importance of connection should never mean ignoring the very real financial challenges many families face.

Today’s blog acknowledges the hidden and visible costs of the summer holidays, from childcare and food to travel, activities and the emotional pressure to make every day feel special. It is a reminder that financial stress is not a personal failure, that parents should not be judged by what they can afford and that families deserve practical support, understanding and compassion.
