SEPTEMBER 11: Feeling safe enough to speak
Creating workplaces, communities and everyday spaces where everyone feels seen, valued and able to be themselves.
We all know what it feels like to have something we want to say at work and then hesitate, perhaps wondering whether it is the right time, whether our opinion will be welcomed, or whether speaking honestly might change the way someone sees us. Sometimes we speak anyway, and sometimes we quietly decide that saying nothing feels easier.
But imagine a workplace where you could ask the question, share the idea, admit the mistake or offer a different perspective without having to first worry about how it might affect your place within the team. A workplace where disagreement is not seen as disloyalty, questions are not mistaken for incompetence and people understand that hearing a different point of view can make all of us better at what we do.
That is the heart of psychological safety, and it is something we can all help to create through the way we listen, respond and make space for the voices around us.
Because when people feel genuinely safe enough to speak, we don't just hear more voices — we discover more ideas, perspectives and possibilities.
