August 8: LOOKING After Yourself

This month is an invitation to challenge our way of thinking. Let’s Talk Honestly About the realities of family life during the summer holidays.

Throughout the first week of this series, we explored many of the pressures that parents quietly carry every day. We talked about letting go of the need for a perfect summer, recognising the weight of the mental load, resisting the urge to compare ourselves with others and accepting that feeling tired doesn't make us a bad parent, it makes us human.

This week, we'd like to build on those conversations by focusing on something that is often pushed to the bottom of every parent's priority list: their own wellbeing.

For many of us, looking after ourselves feels like an indulgence or something we'll get around to when life becomes less busy. The reality, of course, is that family life rarely slows down. There will always be another job to do, another lunch to make, another problem to solve or another person who needs us. If we keep waiting for the "right time" to take care of ourselves, that moment may never come.

Over the next few days, we'll be exploring why caring for yourself isn't something to feel guilty about. It's an important part of caring for your family too. Because when parents feel supported, rested and valued, everyone benefits.

So, as we begin Week 2, we'd like to invite you to, just for a moment, place yourself on your own list. Not at the top, not above everyone else, but somewhere on it. Because your wellbeing matters too.
