August 23: Helping Children Transition Back To School

This month is an invitation to challenge our way of thinking. Let’s Talk Honestly About the realities of family life during the summer holidays.

For some children, returning to school brings excitement about seeing friends, meeting a new teacher and beginning a fresh year. For others, the change in routine may bring uncertainty, worry or sadness about leaving behind the freedom and familiarity of the holidays. Many children will experience a mixture of emotions, sometimes without being able to explain exactly what they are feeling.

Throughout this final week, we are exploring how families can end the summer well by making space for rest, reflection and the emotions that often come with change. Preparing for September is not only about uniforms, school bags and earlier mornings; it is also about helping children feel emotionally supported as they move from one season into another.

Today’s blog looks at gentle ways to reduce anxiety before the new school term, from listening carefully to children’s worries and creating a sense of familiarity to allowing mixed feelings without trying to make every concern disappear.
