August 22: Ending Summer Well

This month is an invitation to challenge our way of thinking. Let’s Talk Honestly About the realities of family life during the summer holidays.

As we begin the final week of our summer wellbeing series, the beginning of September is starting to appear on the horizon. For some families, the return to school will bring a welcome sense of routine after weeks of balancing work, childcare, meals, activities and the changing pace of the summer holidays. For others, the thought of the holidays ending may bring sadness, uncertainty or the feeling that the weeks have passed far more quickly than expected.

This final week is about ending summer well and preparing emotionally for the changes ahead. We will be exploring the value of quiet time, the importance of allowing children to experience and express their feelings about September, and the small ways families can move towards a new routine without placing more pressure on themselves.

We begin with boredom! When children say there is nothing to do, parents can quickly feel responsible for finding an answer. Yet sometimes, the quiet space between activities allows imagination, independence and reflection to grow.

Today’s blog explores the hidden benefits of doing nothing and why children do not need every moment to be planned, entertaining or productive.
