August 21: Celebrating What you’ve already given your children
This month is an invitation to challenge our way of thinking. Let’s Talk Honestly About the realities of family life during the summer holidays.
As we reach the end of our third week together, we are taking a moment to reflect on the pressures that money can place on family life during the summer holidays and everything parents continue to give their children despite those pressures.
Throughout the week, we have explored the belief that expensive does not always mean better, celebrated the value of free family time and acknowledged the very real financial challenges many families face. We have talked about the difficulty of comparison, the pressure to provide and the small traditions that can become part of the memories children carry into adulthood.
When money is tight, it can be easy to focus on what has not been possible: the activities that were out of reach, the plans that had to change or the experiences we hoped to offer but could not afford. Those feelings are understandable, and recognising the value of connection should never mean pretending that financial hardship does not matter or that love alone can solve the practical challenges families face.
Today’s reflection is an opportunity to look beyond the things that could not be bought and notice the care, reassurance, time and sense of belonging that have already been woven into everyday family life. Many of these moments may have seemed ordinary while they were happening, but they can become part of the emotional foundation children carry with them as they grow.
