August 12: Invisible Emotional Labour
This month is an invitation to challenge our way of thinking. Let’s Talk Honestly About the realities of family life during the summer holidays.
Much of parenting is easy to see. The meals we prepare, the school runs we complete, the washing we fold and the endless practical tasks that keep family life moving are all visible parts of caring for children.
It is the constant emotional thinking that happens quietly in the background. Noticing when a child seems different, remembering something they were worried about, helping siblings work through an argument, offering reassurance after a difficult day and trying to make sure everyone feels safe, understood and loved.
This emotional labour is often carried without recognition because it can be difficult to explain and even harder to measure. Yet it requires time, attention and energy, particularly when parents are managing their own worries alongside everyone else's.
Today's blog explores the invisible emotional work that so many parents do every day and reminds us that while we spend so much time noticing how everyone else is feeling, our own emotions and wellbeing deserve care too.
