August 4: When the Mental Load Doesn’t Take A Holiday
This month is an invitation to challenge our way of thinking. Let’s Talk Honestly About the realities of family life during the summer holidays.
When we think about the demands of parenting during the summer holidays, it's often the practical tasks that come to mind. Keeping children entertained, preparing meals, juggling work, organising childcare and managing family routines all require time and energy. But behind those visible responsibilities lies the mental load.
The constant stream of thoughts running quietly in the background, the shopping list you're updating while making breakfast, the holiday club you've remembered to book, the birthday present you still need to buy, the appointments coming up next week and the endless planning that keeps family life moving. Even when you're sitting still, your mind is often anything but.
Today's blog explores why the mental load can feel even heavier during the school holidays and offers a reminder that carrying so much, often without anyone noticing, can be exhausting. More importantly, it reminds us that recognising the weight of that invisible work is the first step towards giving ourselves permission to ask for help, simplify where we can and let go of the expectation that we have to remember everything all of the time.

This interactive session explores the rich and diverse heritage of South Asian communities in the UK, with a personal focus on the British Pakistani experience. Drawing on the facilitator’s family history, including their grandfather’s Windrush-era migration, the session highlights the resilience, cultural expression, and challenges faced by South Asians across generations.
Topics include migration journeys, language and generational gaps, living between two cultures, the importance of religious celebrations as moments of identity, and the ongoing challenges of under-employment despite educational achievements. The session fosters understanding, celebrates cultural pride, and encourages authentic allyship and inclusion.
