1. What percentage of UK men haven’t been to their GP in over a year?

While exact figures vary by survey and methodology, studies do all conclude the same thing: a significant portion of UK men are reluctant to see a doctor, with some data indicating a massive 65% ‘avoid seeking medical help for 'as long as possible’. 

The 2024 study we used for this question found that 27% of men had not had a GP appointment in the last 12 months.

The most recent GP Patient Survey for England found that three times as many males as females (6% versus 2%) had not had an appointment since being registered with their current GP practice.

Data from England in 2023 shows that 35.6% of avoidable deaths (54,129 deaths) were treatable, while the ONS data for 2019 in England found treatable deaths accounted for 36.3% of avoidable deaths.
