“There’s so much to do - where do I start?”

I created the Powered By Diversity App, and this was my exact starting point in 2017 when Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) landed on my plate. I cared deeply about EDI so I was excited to take it on - but, being a scientist and technologist I couldn’t start trying to solve a problem before I knew what the problem was!

I’m glad you asked this question because “There’s so much to do in EDI - where do I start?” is the reason Powered By Diversity exists!

I made this short video to introduce myself. . .

On the surface the ‘problem’ was clear: We needed more diversity throughout the company, especially at leadership level. What I needed to know in order to solve it was:

  • What are all the reasons we don’t have that already?

  • Where are the biggest gaps and which groups are they affecting - and how?

  • What is causing those gaps?

I went out looking for the platform or tool that would tell me all this and I found . . . nothing.

I couldn’t act without first knowing that I was doing the right things for the right people, so I set about making what I needed. 3 years, 3 universities, 8 pilot studies and a lot of hours of research later…our Powered By Diversity data platform was born.
